my iMac mouse endevor, and the DVD iBook thread has propted me to ask about making a Mac Modification catagory....

Mac chipping/moding etc is quite vast, it would make a great section...

just a suggestion

I like to tinker. It would be cool to have a forum where I could find nifty little mods to play around with.

I think this is a good idea, but I think we'd have to make everyone agree to a stringent legal protection policy that anything anyone hears in that forum is completely up to them to judge its validity etc.

Someone should contact Monish about this. Or Misha.

I think that we all realize that any time you start tinkering with the hardware, it's done at your own risk.

i agree with markhers,
to belay any accusations towards MacNN, there should at least be some "warning".

Considering the extent to which one can tinker with a Mac (read: not a lot), I think it would be best to keep the topics in the applicable, already existant forums (overclocking a G4 would go in the PowerMac forum, for example).

I disagree. Even though there might not be tons of mods you can do, it seems like we have an inovative bunch here. Never know what some one will come up with. Besides, it would be nice to have a furom you can just goto to look for mods or chipping or what ever else, without having to paw through all the other posts. I think it is a good idea, and if noones using it, just do away with it. No harm in trying....

I think its a good idea, I'd like to mod my iMac this summer, (HOPEFULLY GET A BETTER GRAPHICS CARD ARGH!) and do a few other neat things, and I'd like to hang out with other people who are creative and wanting more power like me.

GOOOOOOO mac mods forums!

I'd vote for its own forum, if for absolutely no other reason than having it in the regular fora would be an implied condoning of the actions described. The only way people would be absolutely sure of the distinction between discussion/topical information & hacking your computer would be to completely separate their Spheres of Influence.

Great idea, but maybe make it for registered users only, so that someone who posts a mod that deliberately trashes macs can at least be traced.

That's not a bad idea. I think we all know that the regular forum members are pretty trustworthy (well except Anthony), but it doesn't hurt to keep it on the safe side.

Hey! I may not be an angel, but I am trustworthy! I'd never do anything bad like that. And don't forget, I have an iMac too. I love them, I use them. Just because I mostly use a PC doesnt mean I hate Macs and want them to die. Geez, show a little compassion!

I am totally in favor of a MAC Mod forum. The free exchange of ideas will be an incredible asset to all! I love to tinker with both iMac's and PC's all the time, and I'd love to hear some new ideas. There is already a thread here about Mods to the iMac mouse, and it's been a big success, let that be reassurance to support this new forum!

Everyone has done something cool to their Mac once, hey, theres even clubs for Mac modification. My favorite examples of "Maxed out Macs" are the G3 Color classic, and the Mac Plus with an INTERNAL CD rom

My favorite computer design was the 1GHz Mac Plus April Fools Joke. It made the Mac Plus have a 256 bit bus, 1GHz 68000 processor, and it required 1 liter of liquid nitrogen per hour.

Hold your butt, dude.

Seriously, you'll get to like it.

We are definitely putting one together. We'd like it to be a complete resource, instead of just a forum. Links, real moderator, interesting and trustworthy info, and all that. If anyone would be interested in being part of such an undertaking, or if anyone would like to audition for moderator in this forum, please respond to this thread. Or, better, start a new one. And only people who want to contribute please - no noise. Thanks!

Cool. I think it really is a good idea, and I'm glad you are looking to put it together right. I would love to audition for moderator, but the fact that I know nothing would probably count against me. Oh well, at least we get the forum. Very cool of you guys!

Ouuu yeah

Id be highly interested in posting to a Mac Hardware Forum. Because this is what interests me most. I would try to help you guys to the mod, i'd also post my stuff if required.

I guess there might be many requests - Id live to moderate such a forum.

My current projects are: 100 Mhz Performa 5200, 60 MHz IIfx, Performa-TV-Tuner in PowerMac 7100, SONY GDM-1950 on a new Mac, faster Newton 120.

To be moderator you must:

1.) Sign over your first born & soul
2.) Endure the seven deadly plagues of Egypt
3.) Do all that stuff Indiana Jones did in The Last Crusade
4.) Suffer the Stigmata of Jesus Christ
5.) Overcome (single handedly) the entire Army of the Undead along with the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse
6.) Defeat the Cyclops and Hydra and their buddies in Ancient Greece
7.) Defeat the French Army and solve the riddles given by the old man at the bridge in Monthy Python's Quest for the Holy Grail
8.) Kill ALL the bad guys in all the Marvel and DC comics
9.) Battle and destroy Godzilla, King Kong, Mothra, the StayPuft Marshmellow Man, the combined Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, all the bad GoBots and Transformers, the Thundercats, all the Pokemon, the Teletubbies, the Minotaur, Skeletor from He-man, Shredder from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Dr. Claw from Inspector Gadget....ALL AT THE SAME TIME.
10.) Buy a Mac

THEN you can be moderator.

Thats right! except the goodies weren't known as the Transformers, Transformers identified them as a 'race'.
The goddies were the Autobots, and the baddies the Decepticons :-)

Just cuz you knew there were good and evil doesn't mean that "bad Transformers" meant anything really.

I like the Beast Wars Transformers. Way cooler than the ones that turn into cars and wiffle ball bats and what not. Optimus Primal is the MAN (well, the APE)!! Plus Black Arachnia is pretty hot for a cartoon robot spider chick. Uh-oh, Me thinks I've said too much... ummm... look at the time, gotta run!

PC's aren't inherently evil. Ask a Mac guy what they think about Linux, and they'll often say one of two things:

+ What's Linux?
+ I've heard of it, but what would I do with.

PC's are a collection of electronic pieces which comprise a computer. The evil aspect for most is Windows and Microsoft.

I of course don't mind Windows, but I hate the interface, and I hate 96dpi, so I steer clear when I can. But if you have a good graphics card and a 17" or better monitor, it can be a semi-enjoyable experience. Course this has nothing to do with this thread...
