I assume the number of stars refers to the quantity of posts, not quality?

Let's see ... Now we've got Junior Members, Members, Senior Members, Veteran Members, Elite Members and "Addicted to MacNN."

Can any admins tell us how many posts it takes to reach each level?

Hmm, is it possible to modify these numbers, make it top out at 5,000 posts? since only a few people have that

Yes, you can modify the numbers, but seeing as there are only a few (half a dozen) or so with more than 1,000 posts... and just one with more than 2,000 posts, I don't really see the point in boosting it to 5,000... that's an awful lot of posts...

It's all just for fun.

Could also be seen as a measure of how we spend our leisure time.

5 star people could have the 5 star syndrome - bloodshot eyes, thick glasses, stooped shoulders, calloses
on their mouse hands and butts...............

What are the odds?

Seems to me the addiction takes hold long before 1,000 posts. Labels, gotta love 'em.
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Yonkers can have better TV reception.

I'm sorry to say that, but I find this a little bit stupid, it's just a mere repetition of the already displayed number of posts. The threads looked very functional before, now this is totally redundant.

What you should do, I think, is let registered members give appreciations to other members. If someone helped the community by posting a very interesting post/thread, then the helper will be rewarded, simple enough. Of course, let only members vote, not outsiders otherwise there'll be cheating. Also, if the member that is voting is an influent member - read: with many posts -, the reward will be greater.

What do you think of that? I think this is fair and useful.

Wow, excellent idea... but that would be a PITA to implement. There's no hack out there even near to that idea, which would mean I'd need to write it by hand... and I really dislike programming in Perl/CGI... food for thought, though. Some day, perhaps... some day...

maybe instead of the stars, we could use the graphical-update-widget-thing (you know, the blue thing that moves during copying, etc.)? the current stars look like they've been copied out of some clip art from 1987 or something...

Misha, I'm ready to help if you want! Is it a ready engine you're using here or is this a custom made forum?

Anyway, what should be needed is a link on each post like "Vote for me" that would increment a number. Depending on this number, you would display the number of stars...

I have no clue how you work over there so it might not seem as simple as I see it...

I can already tell you that won't work:

"That's not fair!!! I meant to vote for PrivateCitizen, but I voted for Ca$h by mistake. I demand a recount. Again and again."

Sound familiar?

I like it as it is... good job Misha.
Haha, "addicted to MacNN"
As was said, its all just for a bit of fun really - if something like those 'karma points' were added - well... I honestly can't see it working out very well...
People would vote for themselves from other IP addys, and so on... you get the picture...

UBB is a commercial product, though there's a free-ware version. The commercial product costs something like $200. It's written in perl, and I don't know if MacNN has customized it.
Is this a good place for an argument?

I disagree regarding the voting for quality of contributions. I, like ThinkInsane, prefer posting in the Lounge more than any other forum. The reasoning is simple: I am not a technician. My knowledge of my Rev B is limited in scope and understanding. I enjoy the Lounge as it is.

The stars by our names does seem redundant, though I like the new IP Logged icon! If you are to use an icon use the Happy Macs that people are recommending in the Lounge:

Is it just my iMac, or are the column sizes all messed up again? They were fine earlier today (on my work wintel), but now I find the columns sized wrong and mislabelled. What gives?

Of course the stars are absolutely redundant and completely useless, but they are fun and pretty. Any other icon (like little Mac haed or whatever) would be just as good as far as I'm concerned, as long as it's pretty and fun.
Question: why does it max out @ 5 stars? it should go up to 6 stars >1000 posts, etc. and Cipher with his 2000+ deserves something special, like maybe another special color or something to show how super-spiffy his Addiction is, beyond just the bounds of a normal 1000-post addiction.
Also, why do Moderators with <500 posts have 5 stars?

I agree as to the stars. six, or special colours past a point would be neat.

as for moderators with fewer posts, it's because they have to put so much extra _thought into each post, and they have to READ so many.

hey. we neet do add to the graphical smilies; tongue out sort of teasing...
