Admins are people who work at/for MacNN.

Moderators are people who volunteer their time to moderate the forums. It doesn't matter where they live or who they are, as long as they don't get easily offended (which is a lot more challenging sometimes than you may think). By way of process, for me personally it was when I saw a message on the board saying that a few new forums were opening up and people interested in being a mod for one of them should send an email saying why they thought they'd make a good one. So I did, and John, one of the admins here, decided he liked it. So here I am.

As far as I know, there aren't any moderator openings as such, but it couldn't hurt to send an email anyways on the off chance that a position is opening up.

Okay a couple more questions. Is there a minimum amount of time per day that you "should" patrol the boards? And do you use your "moderating powers" on only select boards or can you do what you do on any of the boards? I know that each seperate forum has a list of who moderates it but do you step outside of those assigments?

No. Generally I try to check in once a day, usually after I get home from work. If I'm going to be away for a couple of days or more I'll e-mail Misha to let him know.

You have mod abilities only on the forums you're assigned to. If I see a thread flaming out in the Lounge I can e-mail Misha about it, but I can't edit posts or close/move threads.

Actually, we're always looking for more good moderators.

In particular, the iBook, Older Systems, Peripherals, Networking, Internet Software, and OS X forums need more mods...

Okay this is my last question. In order to be a mod in a forum do you need lots of knowledge on the forum you are moderating? For example if one was a mod on the iBook forum would you have to know everything about them? Or are the mod duties basically making sure everythins is on topic with not too much flaming going on?

Some knowledge is most certainly required and the more the better, as we often ask moderators that moderators participate in answering questions and discussions. Of course, part of the duties are just to make sure the form stays in working condition (double posts, flame wars, etc.), but it's always helpful to have a knowledgeable moderator that can respond to unanswered inquiries--whether it because the query is difficult or very easy. That said, people who can pledge to visit/moderate popular frequent forums more often, may not be asked to have such a high standard of knowledge. You can often become very knowledeable in short time by reading all the posts of a particular forum.

I could moderate either iBook or Peripherals forums. I spend a lot of time here during the week.

I think I'm going to e-mail Misha...

So who is MacNN staff? Is the job delegated to whomever draws the shortest straw? Or do Misha, John, mkbhatia...duel it out in a royal rumble for the rights to moderate for the day?

I thought you only had to know how to be a total jerk
