Does a chat room actually exist, or is it just being worked on?

There currently does exist a completely unused MacNN chat room. It is a chat service thing shared with AppleInsider. I do not know that there is a link to t from the anywhere on the MacNN page, but the "Chat" link in the top right corner of AppleInsider.com leads to the link below. http://www.appleinsider.com/chat.shtml
The page loads a 125k Java applet chat program, and then a thing pops up prompting you for a nick to log in with. The chat window has a "Rooms" button, which brings up a list "AppleInsider","MacNN Chat","Padded Cell." By default you enter AI, but with two clicks you can move to MacNN. The "padded cell" is a place of mystery. It is locked. No one has ever been inside.
So yes, there does exist a chat room. There is never anyone in there, which is not all that surprising, considering how little publicity it has.

AOL Instant Messenger seems easier, but I'd like the option to send private messages to other MacNN users. I understand that some users prefer not to display their email address or may not even have an AOL screen name, so how could I contact another member without publicly posting a message?
