We've experienced a huge spike in traffic over the past several weeks; these have resulted in several performance issues on our servers, including those mentioned here. We have been working over the last few days to upgrade our servers and software to offer better performance. In addition, we have been working to tune our software for optimal performance.
As you may have noticed, when our servers are busy (and the queue for requests becomes backed-up), dyanamic portions of the sites do not respond, and instead returns the user to the main page (instead of displaying the somewhat cryptic and less-than-friendly error messages). We have also had to turn off our bulletin board system intermittantly to reduce server load.
While we have upgraded some of our hardware and software, the major challenge remains in maintaining services while performing upgrades and finding reliable (inexpensive) talent to help architect and help upgrade the systems/technologies has been difficult. We hope that over the next week to continue to optimize the software and perhaps even purchase new hardware. In meanwhile, we ask for your patience, and as always, we welcome feedback--especially from Linux experts or system admins--at webmaster@macnn.com.
Thanks again for reading, submitting news tips, and providing feedback In the coming weeks we hope to provide a more consistent level of service to MacNN readers.
best,
monish
