I understand MacNN's boards were to be completely revamped, but assuming some of the changes were to be cosmetic, I don't see any change. Not that I had a problem with the former format; I am just curious. So what is new?

From the main MacNN page:

Due to some unexpected performance issues with user load and technical issues with our forums upgrade, we have restored our UBB-based forums until we can find a better solution. Your patience over the past few days is much appreciated. We hope to have a better solution and a much smoother upgrade path late next week. We expect that the server will be overwhelmed over the next week or so, and appreciate your patience as we work toward a better solution. Thanks again for your patronage and your support. Feel free to mail us at webmaster@macnn.com with comments and suggestions for upgrades, technologies, platforms, or advice.

I was able to connect to the board earlier with the new look and it looks very nice. Though it was extremely slow. I'm glad you guys brought back UBB, but good job out that new look.

I saw the main page, but I couldn't get into any of the forums.
I liked what I saw, though.

Sorry it didn't work out.

I got into the boards, but it was slooooow.

The way it looked, I was the first person to post a new thread in the Lounge (one person had replied to the TI v. HP thread, I believe)... but that post is gone now, like I anticipated while writing it.

It would be nice if MacNN would install the new board system in parallel with the old one, instead of removing the old one until the new one is up. That way, you can just switch over instantly. Especially since OS X is just around the corner, we need our message boards!

I'm sure they would do that if it was at all feasible.

i noticed a 'vBulletin' message at one point during the 'upgrade'. Is that the new board? vBulletin with php and MySQL? It seems like it would be a lot faster and would scale better than the flatfile ubb, but I have never seen the performance benchmarks... anyone know?

I have seen vb forums that were pretty slow, and others that were lightening fast, so who knows...

oh yeah, as previously mentioned, it would be nice to have the old board available as a resource - maybe with all the topics closed or something...

vBB is theoretically fast, being PHP/Mysql... but the server couldn't handle all the hits it requested.
I believe vBB is quite heavy, but runs well providing the right resources are available.
I'd say a new server is probably needed...

Here's a radical idea for you. One of the weblog sites was in need of some new hardware recently, and let it be known that they were accepting donations to that end. Some other sites picked it up, and before long they had plenty of money for a new server (my $10 included).

You could use Amazon.com or PayPall to collect the donations, and send something back as a token thanks. Like a sticker or something. OR, even better, come up with a new designation to go with the stars like "Supporter". ('Donor' would invite too much poor humor).

I now that during your upgrade outage, I realized how much I enjoy using this site. Make it easy, give me a cool ranking, and I'm in for $20.

Awww...but vB has some cool features. I'm sure you could hack UBB to deliver them, but I personally would prefer a PHP/MySQL solution vs a CGI one becasue of the simplicity of adding features. If I'm not mistaken, doesn't vB have better admin control over every aspect of the system? Plus the searches proceed much smoother...

I don't know much about servers and what not, but can't vB be distributed across a farm of servers accessing the database on a central, fast server (i.e. 10,000 RPM Drives/Lots of RAM/etc)? What exactly was the problem with the new system? Lack of hardware?

Just a few thoughts...
