Congratulations! You finally came to your senses. This proves that we, the users of internet, have a word to say and that you, MacNN (or whoever is on top now) listen. Thanks for that. Now, it's time to sit back, evaluate what direction you want this site to take and study carefully all avenues for it. Slowly, one thing at a time. Design doesn't come cheap neither easy of fast. Success on the web either. With all the past success, let's put priorities in the right order. We would love to find again our beloved site with a lift-over. But one that is being well thought, that enhances what we already love and serves the needs for future success. Let's all applaud for this move back and let the "true" process of change take it's place...

What a shocker this morning when I went for my daily dose of MacNN. My old slippers have arrived back at the house and I'm now comfortable.

And maybe Misha is going to be sticking around??????

hello,

I am not trying to stir up anything but I'm just going to point out a few things.

First off from an information architecture standpoint, the "new" version is actually well thought out. The heirarcy of important content flows well from top to bottom.

Its very distrating to the eyes to have extra content on both sides of text you are trying to read. This why the left side text : right side extra content/links makes sense. You can visually block out unneeded text while you are reading.

From a design standpoint, I think the "new" site was exectued very well. Considering the amout of news that flows in and is posted every day its organized in a very readable fashion and allows the user to find what your looking for.

Its also has a very clean look to it, nice use of lines and soft colors. The turquoise was garrishly annoying.

I always thought the old design was very unorganized and cluttered with links.

Also it strikes me as odd that those that hate the change are so "comfortable" with the old design. As mac users I have always thought that we embrace change and allow things to change the staus quo.

Anyway my 2cents.

I am glad the old look is back. The new one required too much scrolling.

Now you just need to fix AI, I know it's up now--but no one expects that to last for long.

I dont think they changed it back, I think somebody made a mistake and it reverted to the old format. LOOK! It doesn't even have the NEWSFACTOR NETWORK banner now. Maybe they split up, who knows? But I want the good stuff of that new look back. (Not the bad stuff)

THANK YOU.

I agree with krafix. Set targets and design towards them.

The (old) new design did not work. If people who have to use (or consume) a design don't like it (or can't work with it) then it wasn't "thought out well from a design standpoint.". Form follows function.

After spending a bunch of days looking at the "new look" now a few days looking at the old look, it occurs to me WHAT bugged me about the "new look." It was the headlines for each paragraph of new items.

Ditch the large, bold "headings" and I don't think I'd have a probem with the new look. I DO prefer a light colroed background..it really opened things us visually.

So what happened to NFN? One thing that bugged me therte was that they didn't list MacNN amoung the "NFN sites" list. So once you left NN for something like osOpinion (another good site) there was no way to get nack using the NFN menu.

Silence is deafening here.. I hope someone (Monish, Misha)will let us know what is going on.

Well, I hadn't gotten accustomed to the new design yet. I can say that it seemed more complicated at first look. But, the data was organized into definite sections. I can't decide weather the new design was better or worse, but perhaps the best way to have decided would have been to have an online poll/vote of MacNN readers.

It does seem odd, however, that there is no mention of the NewsFactor Network now... Maybe something else is up here?..

Since they were able to add a link for a more "classic" look page during the NFN episode, here is a suggestion: having the regular site's content but through some kind of a test-link with the new design for feedback from users. Like a Preview Release design page to find out the bugs before official release with the help of the ones who read this e-v-e-r-y-d-a-y...

That's odd, I thought everyone knew what was up. NFN is gone for good and Monish has 100% ownership. That's why there's no NFN stuff.

An official announcement will be made by Monish, probably sometime this week. Check the Lounge.

How can NewsFactor be gone, when macnn.com still bears NEWSFACTOR stuff? (Look near the bottom)

Also, the classic/newsfactor pages have been switched, thats all. You can view the old NewsFactor/MacNN site at http://macnn.com/macnn.phtml

They're gone. The severance deal was that MacNN would run NFN's link headlines for a few months. However, they have no presence at MacNN or MacNN's forums, and no ownership in MacNN as a company. No one from NFN comes here anymore. They're gone.

Nothing very interesting. Just the agreement...

Gorgonzola,

I did see Dave-NFN browsing the boards, sometime before midnight last night (Tuesday). I thought that was interesting.

Did you click on his member name and notice that he's been demoted to normal member status, not an administration account? That's what you'd have found if you had. He seems to drop by every once in a while just to check that there are no bad comments about NFN, which was part of the deal. Monish is still sorting out the details of the deal with Dave, but for all practical purposes, NFN's influence and presence at MacNN is null. Also, within a few weeks (when the deal is finished), I doubt he'll be around any more at all. It's probably just to ensure that the transition back to normalcy has gone over properly.

I did notice that he was a now regular member. I just thought it was interesting that he showed up. I am just wondering how long they will be watching the forums. It just seems like a big brother thing. I am not trying to stir up anything.I have set on the sidelines for all of this, I just find the fact of them watching us bothersome.

I am just a little confused, will there always be a ban against saying anything bad about NFN. Again, I am not trying to stir anything up, and as you can see I have not posted here before, I am just a lurker that decided to stick his head up and see what was going on.

Thanks for your time,
Spoon

No problem.

Basically, I doubt it. Frankly, I'm on the same page as most people, as I think that saying "no disparaging comments" about NFN is a hugely vague phrase. Obviously, everyone is relieved that things are back to normal, but basically we have to (try to) avoid things like "F*** you NFN" and the like.

I think it's only the most extreme invective against NFN that we have to avoid. I don't know what he was doing here either, but as long as he doesn't actually interfere, it seems okay (IMO).

Also, the thing to remember is that Monish and Dave are still finishing up the details of the deal, so I'm guessing that once the deal is over, Dave won't be stopping by after a week or so. Bu thtat remains to be seen, of course.

hope that helped!
