In general, it seems as such, but specifically after I post a topic or reply, it takes a nice while to get me back to the top of the forum..
I'm on a dialup, but things used to go real smooth with the old UBB, pages would load up instantly it seemed, and now they just go and go and go, then finally, it's done... Is this happening to anyone else? Or are there still bugs to work out...? thanks alot, I like it overall tho, can't wait for DSL

Still working on it. It took 7 hours to get UBB 6 to this stage, and we'll probably need another 2 weeks to install all the hacks and customizations that make a true set of MacNN fora.

Right now it works, though, and there are enough new features to keep people busy for another two weeks.

cheers

Oh, and about the speed. It's because we've been running admin utilities and editing the raw code and running stuff on the forum servers all day, and that slows it down. It's either that or a downtime, which is worse.

So it'll be like this for a week or two until we finish the hacks, and then we'll optimize etc. It should be fast again in a bit.

(I found out that parallax had been running recursive grep searches ... yeesh!)

kinda interesting, I'm now using OS 10 (was under 9.1 when things were sloww) and although I'm sure there's not much work going on behind the scenes at this hour 1am EST, things are much faster, pages load very fast from cache.

gorgonzola and others, good work!

I think i'm a closet UBB junkie

The reason that UBB6 is slower than UBB 5 is because threads are now generated on the fly each time they are accessed. UBB5 generated them once at the time of submission.

So that means since every page gets cgi parsed, the server load goes up, and things slow down...

hope that helps!

Yah, the new UBB 6 has some advantages and disadvantages. One of the main disadvantages is that it doesn't build HTML pages for the threads--thus everything is generated through the cgi script. I'm thinking about installing mod perl to help the speed, but I suspect it is hardware limited.

We're gonna need to get a new machine to handle the simulataneous execution of the cgis. The processor is just way to slow. I'm looking into putting together a box this week with a faster processor. If anybody has an old PIII box laying around, I'd love some of the internals =). I am hoping to have it all put together by the end of the week and then hopefully installed early next week.

mod_perl will help a little, but in the end, you are right, it comes down to hardware...

what parts do you need, I may have some spares lying around...

on a side note, whatever happened to the forum design, that was introducted during the infamous vBulletin switch... I remember thinking that I liked it...

Ok, good news and bad news.

Good news first: we have most of the parts to build a new server. The new server should be Athlon 1.2GHz with 1GB of RAM.

Bad news: it won't be ready until tomorrow. After which we will need to install it at our place in Boston. That may take up to two days, depending how quickly we can find some help. Second, we couldn't get a hold of Motherboard with either onboard SCSI-3 and Ethernet, so the we are using UDMA (ATA)-based drive. The server should be much better, but we really need a SCSI-3 disk to help IO.

So it won't be long until we get new servers! Bear with us. =) Thanks for your patience.

That's unfortunate, cuz I don't do cookies, now, nor ever. Please change back to the old format, or influence those that can. Until then, I guess I'll have to post off-topic replies in order to start new topics.

I agree that the fora are a bit slower since the update.
But it's good to know that the admins know, too.

But why an Athlon when you could bribe Apple to give ya a twenty-seven processor G4?

Ah well, better than a P4
Be happy.

I won't go into details, but let's just say that AppleInsider runs off a G4 Cube with OS X installed ... we've been running on a P3 and Linux, soon to be our Athlon.

We don't want that G4 (although I do )! Not good enough for high-bandwidth servers, yet anyway.

Heh.

i'd like to say that while it may take a moment to post the message, at least i can get to the forum more often than not in omniweb under ubb6.

the old version was hard to get to under onmiweb/X on my dp500/Saw400. i kept having to go back to my SGI and netscape.

the whole purpose of x is to use my sgi in it's terminal only, if at all.

and thanks for giving me my stars back. i was just getting near three.

Ah-ha, Insider is running off a cube eh? I know it's still up, but it looks completely dormant.. in a couple of weeks it's going to be two months since that last update.
