I know the Classic Mac OS like the back of my hand. Yet I can't say the same for Mac OS X; I'm sure I'm not alone. Most Mac traditionalists are completely green to the BSD/NeXT core of our new OS.

With that in mind, I'm wondering if anyone else would like to see a forum created to deal specifically with the Mac user's transition to BSD/NeXT. I would call it "OS X - Transition to BSD/NeXT Environment," but the name isn't important. I personally would like to learn more about: permissions, basic unix commands, reference materials people recommend, NetInfo, if there's such a thing as clean install of the new OS, directory layout (both NeXT and Unix), basic maintenance issues, and general Unix tricks...

I hope it's not considered brash for a lowly member to suggest new forums. FWIW, I think many of us would benefit from what I propose. Additionally, it seems that many questions raised on other OS X forums would be more appropriately placed in their own space.

I'm really excited about this new frontier of our platform; I really want to get much more acclimated with it. I want to eventually know Mac OS X with the same competency I know the Mac OS -- that may not be possible, but I'm going to work at it.

Let the discussion commence. . .

Sorry for having to rescue my post from the dead. I think my idea is valid, but I suspect that I posted it too early in the morning so that it fell all the way off the main listing.

I really think a separate forum for these issues would be ideal. The threads would deal with issues of a more technical nature than FAQs, yet they would be more general than Usage forum threads.

Just a thought. . .

Sounds like a valid idea to me. Why not?

I second (third?) that motion -- I want to learn more about UNIX, the CLI, etc., but I'm kinda afraid to monkey around like I did to learn the ol' System 7, when I knew I couldn't break things too badly even if I tried (or maybe I'm just to timid now). Either way....

I'll move this to the Suggestions forum where the admins are sure to see it.

I think it'd be good. Sharing experiences with UNIX, etc, from a newbies perspective - cool idea

Yeah, I'm the "Mac Genius" everybody goes to about their Macs, and suddenly I'm completely lost. I had to buy a book of Linux/Unix commands...

Ditto, but I will never buy a book or manual! LOL
I don't think I could bring myself to do that

The only prob I see with this idea is it'd look very crowded and messy with ANOTHER OSX forum
