Yeah, I think a forum devoted to music on the Mac would be nice. I think there are more than a few MacNN members that use Macs to make and record music (please respond if you do).
(Please?)

I agree,
I think it would be great to have a dedicated audio forum on the site. With OS X audio sounding as new as it is, it would help to have an area where the muso's could get info, share tips etc etc.
Great Idea

I use my Cube to record music so I would very much like to see an Audio/MIDI forum. Thanks.

Hadn't thought of this ... if there's enough support, this could be interesting. Feel free to post info, email people, etc, but tell them to please post their vote in this thread if they're interested.
I'll be watching this thread for feedback, so please keep it concentrated here!
thanks,
gzl

I also am very much into digital audio recording and midi. However I would not have seen this thread if it wasn't for the "last post" column on the main page that lists all the boards. Gorgonzola, I think you should reconsider removing that column. I find myself going into sections of the board that I otherwise would not.

I would love to see a forum on audio recording related issues. I am into this on my iMac but not as into it as I would like to be.
chikaboom how do you record audio on your cube...there is no 1/8 " sound in/out right so I assume your using some sort of USB audio product.

Nice. Good to see others are thinking the same thing. I think it's worth a try. I'd use it all the time. There are a million things to talk about in the audio world.

Same here.
I'd like to see this forum opened!
I suspect it wouldn't be one of the most frequented ones, but as it is, the Audio/MIDI content is buried in various obscure places throughout the fora.
...a centralized location would be cool.

I was wondering what one would discuss in an audio forum......
TIPS!!
That would be cool...a bit like the graphics forum..
It would be useful to have a separate Logic/Cubase/Digital Performer/Cakewalk/Reason resource of mac users' experiences at your fingertips
No?

I too would LOVE to see an Audio/Midi forum. I have a small home studio and numerous Macs (My humble iMac 400 makes a suprisingly good Music making computer!)
And I too would almost certainly be a regular user of such a forum. So please do create one for us!
My studio is mostly just used for my own projects.. But I do occasioannly get to use it for the odd professional job too, like mixdowns and a fair amount of CD mastering etc.

Interesting. Once we have a good gauge on whether there's sufficient support for the forum, we can start planning more specifically.
<thinkingoutloud>
Maybe we can change the Special Topics category to Developer, and put OS X Developer, Web Developer, and Classic Developer in there, and then have a new Audio/Visual category with Design/Graphics/Illustration, Multimedia & DV, and Audio/MIDI.
How does that sound to you guys?

It sounds good to me. I'm glad to see this idea getting support. I know it wouldn't be posted in that much, but there's a few forums here that I feel would not get as many posts as an audio forum would.
Perhaps, to make it more broad, make it a "Music on the Mac" forum, so that everything that deals with music coming in and out of the Mac (including MP3s and burning CDs) is covered. Or is that too broad? Thoughts?

"Music on the mac" - yep, good idea. A general title like that will work well me thinks.
BTW gorgy, the forums are looking really smart - cheers.

Great forum idea! Music is a mainstay of our world, so it only fits to have a forum dedicated to it...and people making music on Macs, that's even better!

Count my vote please! And the first topic I'd like to see discussed would be: what do you think will happen to OMS when all (most) of audio apps get ported to OSX? I've heard some while ago that Apple was going to buy it and that would be an ideal solution but it doesn't look like they're interested and currently OMS is just dying a slow death.
So how is it for starters?

I always found OMS a complete pain in the ass anyway. So if it makes way for something better, then I ain't gonna miss it. I would have thought that who ever makes sequencing/audio software that works under Mac OS-X (Which they don't yet), will most likely integrate their own form of Midi manager.
PS, No one said we can't vote twice So yes PLEASE to the Audio-Midi forum being opened soon!

Since I don't have any experience in audio with Macs, this would be a good forum for me to ask a lot of questions in regards to my band and getting some tracks and such mastered, etc.
I'd love to start doing this, but currently, there's no place to ask such questions.

Just the fact that this topic has already turned into a question and answer thread is proof that a forum for this is necessary.
Yes, OMS sucks the big fat one one and damn protools for not supporting freemidi (how dare I use pro tools for midi!)
Ooopps, there I go.....
Another vote.....what am I up to?

Cool. It's great to see some support for this idea. About the OMS question, I read somewhere in a summary of the WWDC that MIDI support in OS X resembles OMS, but makes it easier, supposedly, for different devices to communicate and configure. I think it's still a work in progress, but hopefully soon we will know for sure.
And, while we're on the subject, I've found that when I use Finale 2000 to play back MIDI in OS X (Classic mode), that the timing of the notes seem much closer to their real values, whereas in OS 9, there seems to be some lag at the end of each measure (especially if there are a lot of notes). If MIDI playback is better than OS 9 in Classic mode, just think how good it will be in OS X native mode!

Well, gorg (or any other mod), what's the verdict? There were a good many responses, and I think if people saw an actual "Music on the Mac" forum listed on the forum page, that there would be even more responses (b.c. of higher visibility), don't you think? Please let us know your thoughts, and if you think it has a chance of making the cut.

Yes, we are indeed considering making this forum, but we aren't going to make it separately. We have a number of restructural changes to implement, and we're planning on implementing them all together.
It does indeed have a good chance of making the cut at this point.
cheers,
-gzl.
