I like to start topics now and then, and am curious about whether anyone ever reads them. Some boards have a counter showing how many times a post has been viewed - I'd suggest just that.

Technically possible with this software?

Anyone else interested?

Just imagine how many hits the "Cipher and Reader have no life" thread must have gotten?

I'll bet the counter would have maxed out!

I was just thinking it would be really cool if there could be two counters, one for total views and one for views since last post. Of course at that point it's taking up more screen real estate, and I don't know whether it would be doable, but it certainly would be cool.
(and maybe even almost... "useful" )
(don't ask how )

i really don't see any point to having a view counter. so what if 43 people have viewed a thread if they haven't replied to it? what meaningful information is conveyed by the number of people who clicked on the link for the thread?

besides, the replies column already serves this purpose in part: it counts the number of people who have viewed the topic and contributed to it.

Things that come to mind:

1 The number reflects the quality of the micro-content, in other words, how well the subject line was composed. Posters of subjects such as 'Check this out' or 'A question...' might just learn the added value of an informative subject line by observing their (most likely) lower number of views. I think most of us can agree good subject lines improve the forum experience, especially when browsing through search results.

2 It might clarify the difference between 'non- interesting' and 'hard-to-answer' questions, as in 'Hmm.. my post has had 120 views so it seems to interest people but no-one here seems to know.'

3 Searching by 'most viewed topic' could be an interesting option, possibly with a time delimiter, as in 'this weeks most viewed thing'. It reflects what are popular items, nothing more.

Personally, as a poster, I'd value points 1 and 2 as a tool for me to improve the quality of my postings.
