Hey guys,

Based on your experience, does it seem like the spam bots have become Javascript savvy? If not, I'm wondering why simply intercepting form submissions to be handled via Javascript is not a more common anti-spam measure with forums so that Javascript is required to post, create new accounts, etc.?

If they are Javascript savvy, do you have a sense as to what extent this is so?

My impression is that they're stupid. They've tried volume registrations, long-phones-list posts that get deleted almost immediately, registering unposted accounts to make their bio ads visible, low-calorie posts to make spam sigs visible, and normal-language bots that try to participate and make recommendations. Trouble is the AI bots have an IQ lower than ... er, well, on the low side.

So then, if simply adding Javascript observers/event listeners to the submit buttons to trigger the form submit via Javascript is all that would be needed to foil the spammers, why hasn't this been implemented in forum software such as vBulletin and phpBB?

Maybe we're avoiding the JS conspiracy. Though I don't really believe those people vanished, it doesn't hurt to be careful.
