I have used iMovie for a little movie of my sister's graduation.
I want to distribute it via CD (there are more computers than VCRs and I don't have the type of change to buy a Superdrive).
So I have encoded (for test purposes) a little DV clip into the MPEG4 format (750 and 375 kbit/s). The playback is very choppy (1-6 frames per second) on my iBook (600 MHz).
Did I miss something or is MPEG4 just too processor hungry to encode such a video?

Have you tried other resolutions/higher bit rates/another computer? On my QS G4, mpeg4 clips that I have ripped and converted play just fine (original clip size 640x480, downsized to 512x384 in deference to the Mac Plus). Of course, I didn't put restrictions on the bit rate, and the G4 must help...

I have tried bitrates all the way from 3000 to 75 and resolutions down to 600 x 400.
I am trying encoding without limitation.
Unfortunately I do not have access to a G4.

Nope, didn't work. I should really try with a G4, because 6 frames is not really smooth.

make sure your "key frames" number isn't set off or too high. I used to set it at 111, and had very choppy results. I lowered it to 44 and 22 and the fps went up.

I switched the keyframes off and it went up to 15-18 frames. Still not quite smooth, but a lot better. I guess, I have to lower the resolution a bit.
But still a little bit disappointing that video playback is not at maximum.

I forgot to mention that if you zoom in from the original size, frame rates drop too. It's strange, b/c I think it was the other way around before (meaning encoding in at 640x480 gives better fps than a 2x zoom into a 320x240). Also, don't forget to add a mild blur. I hear this helps a bit with the quality:size ratio.
