Can anyone make any recommendations, or share experiences, on PVR devices/systems for the Mac? Are the Formac Studio and EyeTV boxes all that's out there? How do you find them? Do you watch any tv on your Mac or just keep the PVR near your TV?

I would like something very much like Tivo but one step more towards computers. I'd like to be able to plug my cable TV into it but still be able to watch TV on the TV. i'd like it to be fast and reliable.

What's the best way to go?

Dazzle is another solution.

As an owner of the Formac Studio DV/TV:

Here are my comments on it.

The Good: Plenty of inputs (RCA/SVHS/FM/Coax), also can output video (RCA/SVHS). Very little or no noticeable cross input interference. Draws power off firewire bus. High quality video capture.

The Bad: No timing option for video capture (user must turn it on/off). OS X software needs work (and the FM tuner is also unsupported, but that’s a non issue for me). Cost may also be an issue.

As for which one to get, it depends on what your plans are. If you planning on just watch/recording TV then you might get by with an USB solution. But, if you want to dabble in making/editing material (that isn’t recorded as DV) the USB interface will be seriously lacking.
