I watched the slow death of my friend's Sony VAIO as he downloaded mp3s and video from Kazaa nearly nonstop for a year. The half-downloaded files that "failed" had completely fragmented his HD. I defragged multiple times to no avail.

I have an iBook and need to know if this same problem will exist in the HFS+ file system. My option is to partition off a small (500MB) disk to handle my downloaded files, then erase it to get rid of the fragments. Is it worth my time to make a partition?

sounds good to me. personally, i like having partitions. i know some people are against it, but it helps me organize my stuff, plus, if my system goes down, then i don't lose my files. if you are downloading stuff, that's a pretty good idea to put it on a separate partition; and with your partition being only 500mb, you can just burn your data to CD. hell, make it 650mb, just to get the most of a CD.

i've been downloading stuff too, using limewire and stuff, and i haven't noticed any fragmentation, other than the usual that occurs. although, my 'download disk' is a separate 60gb harddrive, so that may make a difference!
