Friend of a friend is looking for a digital to analog converter because he just bought his brother-in-law's old 'digital video camera,' which he says only has analog video out.

Is this possible? He says it is a Panasonic miniDV with a 3CCD system(well, actually he said "3lcd" but I knew what he meant.) I've been looking on the web to see what this could be, but it's hard for me to believe that Panasonic made a digital camera that only has composite video out.

I think your friend's friend is mistaken.

It would help if we knew the model.

Yes, I wish I knew it as well.

He is VERY new to DV, and seems to know a little, so I'm inclined to trust him...but I can't find any such camera on the web. Personally I'm a pretty suspicious as to whether or not is actually is a digital. Maybe it's a hi8 and his brother-in-law was...uh..misktaken when he sold it to him.

Hitachi has older digital camcorders with no USB 2 or Firewire output. Panasonic does too.

However, these are DVD-RAM based. I dunno about miniDV based machines. I've only looked at a few recent ones, and all of them have Firewire.

The very first Panasonic DV camera had no Firewire port...this is circa 1996 or so, right before the Sony VX-1000 was released.

It was called the AG-EZ1, and at that brief moment in history, firwire cards for computers were scarce and it was not clear if Firewire would fulfill it's promise. The VX-1000 came out a little bit later and it's popularity had people clamoring for computers with Firewire.

Looks like your friend was extremely unlucky...it's a pretty good camera otherwise though, and it is 3 chip...comparable to a VX-1000 overall.
