Or do I need the whole DigiDesign hardware? I've seen a few shareware programs for Windows that can take 6 WAV files and make it into a AAC 5.1 channel audio stream.

LE can do it but only manually. You really need the full blown system. You can go to the digidesign user forums to find out heaps on this kind of thing.

I mostly wanna take some of my favoite songs and remix 'em into 5.1. It's just a pain in the ass to constantly switch between my Mac and PC just for editing/encoding.

I'll check the forum out, thanks.

I noticed ProLogic does up to 7.1 DTS, the latest standard. I wonder if I can snag a copy someplace to try it out.

Speaking of which, I saw a demo of 9.1 DTS. Freakin' awesome. They have the full surround (FR, FC, FL, L, R, BR, BC, BL, Sub) plus a dome (looks like half a golf ball) that you stick on your ceiling. The ceiling dome is strictly ambient (birds chirping, background sound, etc.) and makes everything super realistic. It absolutely incredible.

The full version of protools will let you mix in surround, but the app doesn't do DTS (or any other format) encoding.

If you can't afford PT, check out Logic or Digital Performer, they give you surround for about the price of an 001.
