Im kinda new to the multimedia scene on the mac but the other night I was watching a movie in .avi format (I think it was DIVX or 3 or 5) it played beutifully on a PIII 450 notebook, but when I tried to play it on a Pismo 400 /768/10.2 QT6 sound syncing was deteriorating and generally became unwatchable.

Are there any viewers that actually work with these movies or is it a lack of "horsepower" from my Pismo. Geez, I guess the 450PIII was faster in that case.

what software cocktail did you use for playback today? I read that either the divx.com suite or the 3ivx.com "Divx Doctor" is better optimized for G4's, and the other one is better for G3's. And I suspect that the ffmpeg core of VLC and Divosx may have the lowest playback requirements of all. Anyways, if one doesn't work, try another.

I also have a pismo 400 with 576 MB ram and I've never had a problem playing divx, unless it had ac3 or MS GSM audio or something

Try fixing that sound problem using DivX Doctor II (http://doctor.3ivx.com/). This should help. I don't think it a horsepower issue, due to the fact it's a common problem with sound you describe.

I find it impossible to watch divx on my Pismo 400. I met someone over the summer who works for Divx on their Mac team (which is basically just him) and he explained to me why divx is so much faster on PCs. For windows Divx is written in x86 assembly and is heavily tied to the x86 architechture. Divx was designed for PCs from the start and the Mac side is an afterthought. In a few years once Macs get much faster that won't make much of a difference but right now the hardware requirements for Macs is much higher than it should be.

you know I had a feeling it was due to code. I wish it could be optimized, though for my machine.

DivX have allways been a pain in the ass for my PB333. Poorly found ones running well because sound doesn't work in Qt.
Get that codec for better video playback and "DivX Tools" for sound correction.
