I have a large collection of mp3s sitting on a Linux server running Samba - everything is in subfolders by artist/album and all of the ID3 tags are good. I have no problems acessing the server and seeing the files under Jaguar. The collection is too large to fit onto my iBook's hard small drive, so I don't want to import all of the files directly into iTunes, which is what iTunes seems to want to do.

Is there some way to convince iTunes to access this collection of files without copying the mp3s directly to the hard drive? I'd like to be able to play songs from the server via wireless, and also be able to import songs into an iPod, once I get one - I'm willing to deal with downloading to the iPod at 100 Mbps via ethernet.

Morning

I believe there is a preference option in iTunes 3 that involves 'copying files to iTunes folder when adding to library'

you probably want to turn that off (I left it on when I first got Jag and accidentally filled my pb's HD)

other than that, all should work OK - once you drag the music folders onto the library it will reference where they are without moving them

we've used this system over ethernet and airport quite happily.

Hope this helps
