How much editing do you need to do?

If all you want to do is copy programs from VHS to DVD-R, it might make sense to get a set top DVD recorder, for a little over 500 US bux.

The menus are pretty rudimentary, but the image quality is good, and it takes almost no effort. Ie:

1) Plug in VCR outputs into DVD recorder inputs.
2) Press PLAY on VCR and RECORD on DVD recorder at same time.
3) Stop when done and repeat above steps as necessary.
4) If desired, type in the names for your recorded programs and for the title of the disc. Strangely, enough, this is the hardest part of the process, since it's a bit of a hassle typing in text from a remote control.
5) Finalize the disc. (This requires about 3 button presses on your part so it's effortless, but takes a couple of minutes for the player to do.)
6) Enjoy the DVD. All the programs get a menu button with the name you typed in on the button. The recorder automatically puts chapter stops every 5 minutes or so for each program.

You can do more complex editing if you want (before finalizaton), but the real complex stuff is probably best done on a PC or Mac.

Also, if you want exact copies of these discs though, then you'll need a PC or Mac. Or, you could spend around $750ish for a hard-drive endowed DVD recorder, where you can do all the above setup on the hard drive, and then burn multiple copies to DVD-R.

The only problem is Jaguar. The discs work fine in Windows, set top DVD players, OS 9, and OS X.1. However, X.2 broke support for these set top burned DVD-Rs. Very irritating. It seems to be a known issue though, since several people posted the same thing in the Apple support forums when OS X.2 debuted.

dp867 has the power to do it all, just remember that the DVD-R is not on the basic model - it has to be upgraded.
