Does anyone know if it is possible to convert from Windows Media (.wmv) to Quicktime with OS X?
If so, how do you do it?

you have to convert from wmv to avi, then from avi to quicktime.
or you can buy terran's media cleaner pro ($600) to do a direct conversion.

I don't believe Cleaner can convert FROM windows media, only the other way. But if I'm wrong I would love to learn how to do it.
ffmpeg is a unix program that converts to and from many formats, including WMV. look for cocoa wrappers for it like ffmpegX on versiontracker. also note that WMA is not (yet?) supported.
Also, in OS 9 there exists a program called ASFConverter, which is a command-line app that uses WMP's engine to convert to any quicktime format, but it's slow and buggy and not supported, I can't get it to launch in classic, and you'll really have to hunt to find a download somewhere.

i stand corrected. i just opened Cleaner 4 and tried the "convert to quicktime" setting from the wizard and it couldn't open it. I never really tried using that feature, I just saw that conversion option, so I figured it would work. guess i was wrong.

I've tried every way imaginable to convert out of WMV. The best I found is ffmpeg, but it only supports very old WMV files. I had to use tmpgenc in virtual pc to do this. Tmpgenc will easily and simply convert any media format viewable on windows to mpeg. You have control over the framerate, datarate, and quality of the encode.
