interlacing issues...

Ok,

In FCP 3 I've imported a movie from a DV tape. I'm trying to compress it into MPEG4 for the web. I created a new sequence and have changed it's settings ala: "Field Dominance" to None and changed "Pixel Aspect Ratio" to Square. I then laid out the clip on the sequence.

I'm trying to export to a variety of sizes, the first of which is 480x360 and the problem I'm running into is some interlacing issue when the objects on the screen have a lot of movement. For an example see this screen shot of the QuickTime movie and my FCP in the background. Both are on the same frame and notice the lines round the face in QT yet not in FCP?

So, how do I get rid of that interlacing artifact? Are there any other steps I can take to solve this?

If I'm not being clear enough please post follow-up questions and I'll get back to you ASAP.

Thanks!!

~ Mike

Mike,

I'm not a DV guy, but this was my solution to the same problem a bit ago.

See if checking High Quality Enabled and/or Single FieldÊÐÊunder QT Properties (Video Track) helps. Go to that frame with the bad interlacing and make the changes. If it's going to help you'll see the changes immediately.

I also reduced the size to (Half Size) 360 x 240. Damn, it looked sweet.

Good luck.

Mike,

When exporting for the web, I usu. do the following steps:

1)Make a new Sequence with the same DV-NTSC settings as the original and title it "Web Sequence" or some such.
2)Apply the "De-Interlace" filter (under "Video") to the entire sequence and render it.

I also usu. export the movie as a Final Cut Pro Movie (not self-contained), then compress it in either QT Pro or Cleaner 5. This way you can make a small short clip and try a bunch of codecs and sizes to see what works best.

But the "De-Interlace" filter should get rid of your interlacing artifacts.
