I wanna try and make my own VCD.
Which by the way is legal as long as Its my DVD and I don't give the file away... anyway... I can rip the DVD into a .vob file. Cleaner things it can read this file, but it cannot. Is there a way to make it read it, or a way to convert it into something it can read, like an MPEG2 files (I have the MPEG2 codecs for QuickTime). I'm goona try a few settings out and see what I can come up with.
Also how come you can't do VBR and 2 Pass VBR on Apples new MPG4 format in Cleaner?

The short answer is yes, it can be done.
But, when I did this a few weeks back it took nearly the entire afternoon to decode only one chapter on a 500mhz G4. It requires multiple steps with multiple programs. The aduio track is done separatly from the video, and then you must put them back together again.
It is a LOT of work, but if you are interested anyway there are some sites out there that will explain the steps in detail.

Well then thats not what i'm looking for. I'm looking for a way to rip a DVD directly into an MPEG2 file I guess. Than it will go right into cleaner and I can reencode it. I've heard of the twelve step strip and reasseble method before. I'm looking for the better way.

I tried what you are (ripping 1 vob file) and it didnt work either. My solution was to rip the dvd into all its different video chapters/files and audio chapters (using osex). Cleaner can't read .AC3 (or dvd audio) format so you must convert all the audio files into aiff with a different program. Then use cleaner to batch encode all the .M2V (dvd format) video files into whatever format you wish. I'd start by encoding them as a quicktime movie because then you can paste all the files together after they are encoded in mpeg or whatever. Then after the the movie is all put together convert it to vcd mpeg1 format.

The reason this is not straightforward and easy is that Hollywood does not want you to be able to do this legally. They got congress to pass laws making it ilegal to even write down the code that can break the DVD encryption. Then they sue anyone who dares to try.
If and when the courts decide it is our "fair use" to make those copies, someone will write the code and make it easy.
