Hello everyone,
I have some divx movies in the AVI format, that Avi2Mov can't convert, because the sound isn't mp3.
The movies play fine, but some of them are too big to fit on a CD!!
I need a tool to remove a minute or two from the avi file to make it small enough to fit on the CD.
Hopefully something free/shareware
Any helpful suggestions?

Divx Doctor 2 converts any avi or mov, regardless of format.

As for file size. If you just need a few extra MB, the simple conversion to Mov with DD2 gives you some. Also if you burn the disk in Toast in Joliet or PC format you get an extra 2.5 MB or so (up to 703 MB, depending on what brand of blanks you have). If that's still not enough, you can re-encode the audio to mp3 with a low bitrate with iTunes and add it back to the movie with Quicktime Pro. You can also snip the credits off with QT Pro. If that's still not enough, you can cut the movie into two parts with.....QT Pro.

Edit: Divx Doctor 2 converts most avi or mov files, but not all.

So glad DivX doctor is now on OS X!
Very nice work being done over at www.3ivX.com.

I also didn't know about changing the file format before burning. That alone may give me enough room.

Unfortunately, I tried using DivX Doctor II to convert an AVI movie that Avi2Mov rejected. The conversion went fine, but the sound is out of sync with the video. It gradually falls behind the video so that by the middle of the movie, it is unwatcheable.
The sound is fine on the original AVI since I have watched it in VLC.
(this is on a G3 600 mhz iBook so maybe my computer just can't handle the playback decoding necesary?)

I did another conversion using the uncompress sound option and the sound is synced up perfectly now.
Since the result file is like 1.6gigs, its too big to even chop into two parts!

Thank you for the info!

dumb question:
Which version of Toast lets you burn a joliet format CD?
I have Toast 5.1 and only get 4 choices:
Mac
Mac Ext.
Mac + Win
Mac Ext. + Win

?

you might need Toast Deluxe or whatever they call the pay version now. In the Other category, choose ISO 9660. The default settings will cut your file names down to 8 characters with a 3 character extension (8.3 filesnames). but you can change that in the options without losing space (the extra space is taken up by the Desktop Database files for HFS+ volumes.

It's possible your mac is just falling behind. 600 mhz should be fast enough, but your hard drive or system bus might be the bottleneck. If it's behind, and you pause and un-pause, and it's back in sync, then your machine just isn't fast enough. more ram might help if you only have 128. If it's still out of sync, then you can fix it with QTMutator. There's a tutorial for it here:

http://mornmist.2y.net/~blibbler/tut.../synching.html

For the uncompressed audio, you could recompress it to a format easier to play than the original. You never said what the original was, except that it's not mp3. You can compress to mp3 with iTunes, or an intermediate compression in QT Pro. I don't know which audio formats are easier to play though

This little app is great.
I toyed with it for about an hour last night because it takes a while to get the hang of changing the duration of the audio track.
But in the end, I had the sound synced up perfectly, and was able to burn my CD!

Thanks lucylawless.

Now I have a 2-part AVI(DivX) with AAC sound (5 channel if played by a VCD player)
Anyway, when I plop it onto DivXDoctor II it says it will just dump the audio track. But I don't want this if I there's another Avi2Mov app that will know how to leave the AAC track there.
Since QT6 can read AAC I think I must just wait a little while for the next version of DDII.
What do you guys think?

how did you get two avi's that are synched? (keeping in mind that QT Mutator only saves mov files, no matter what you name them)

For your questions about DD2, I suggest you visit the official DD2 forum, where Stux (the author) personally answers questions about it (and many onther knowledgable people might actually know how to solve your problem without an update to the software)

Hi Lucy,
The two AVI's with AAC are a different movie. (part 1 and part 2) It's "Mulholland Drive" which I got from mlDonkey. Plays great in VLC.

I haven't touched them yet with DD2 or Avi2Mov because neither app likes the AAC audio.

The first movie I had a question about was a single movie with unknown audio, which DD2 successfully changed to a .mov file with audio out of synch.

That I fixed with QTMutator

I recommend mlDonkey BTW.

About 25% of all the avis I have tried do are not convertable with DiskDoctor II. I don't know what format they are (inside the frickin' avi) but many of them are playable on vlc which plays around 99% of avis. Barring WMA sound avis.
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.
