Just wondering if anyone knew if Adobe may be releasing an update to after effects by April 2003? When did 5.5 come out? About how long between major revisions?

By then AE 5.5 will have been out for over a year, so there is a good chance that a small upgrade will be out by then, however you can never really tell... premier was stuck at 4.1 forever. My question is... Why wait? Is there some feature that you are waiting for, something that id doesn't have that you need it to do? AE5.5 is by far the best yet. Now with its 3d capabilities you can do things easily that were never before possible under 4.x. If you need AE then get it now... you wont be disappointed. It sounds like you don't have a lot of experience with AE anyhow. I have been working with it for over 6 years now and still haven’t come close to mastering it. Buy now... learn as much as you can as fast as you can... buy the books... take classes... just use it, fiddle with its features, see what things do, that’s the best way to learn what a program like that can really do... then if and when an upgrade comes out, you may have gotten the hang of about .02% of its capabilities and can begin to appreciate what will come with its upgrade.

Yeah I already ordered the software. The reason why I was asking was because I was offered a maintainance agreement where I could get a free upgrade if that upgrade happens before the university's contract is up (in april 03). It costs $25 more but I was wondering if that's $25 well spent (assuming there is an upgraded version). I can't wait to get started on AE! I'm going to go looking for books this weekend! I'm even thinking about ordering the class on DVD (as advertised on adobe's website). I'm just getting into it starting and hopefully with this, FCP and illustrator, I can come up with some good stuff.
