Hey, I've just bought a copy of Final Cut Pro 3 and want to do a backup copy, considering it's a $2000 program here in Oz. I normally backup software, and its saved me a couple of times in the past. especially since I often mess around with my equipment, reinstalling, etc.
Since this is a legitimately owned copy, its perfectly legal to do a backup isn't it? If so, why do I keep getting dud copies in DiscCopy? Or do I have a dud cd? It appears to have installed properly.
Confused.

Ive found info on the web about burning dodgy downloaded copies, but that doesn't help me coz Ive actually got a physical disc that I cant copy in the first place. if anything goes wrong with the disc i don't want to have to download a pirate copy from the net just to get going.

Just install the software and keep the disks somewhere else. That will keep you safe.
Or just mount the disk - use Disk Copy to make an image of the CD - and then burn the image - you will be able to mount this image and run the installer like if it was on a CD.
.... I think.

Thats the problem, I cant do a copy in the first place. Disk Copy and Toast both report errors when I do this, some sort of protection Im guessing at the start of the disc. There are copies of v.3 floating all over the web, so it may be something introduced to the v3.0.2 discs. As I said before, don't want to be resorting to dowloading if this disc ever got damaged. Chances of something ever happening are of course very slim, but at $2000.00, I think a 30 cent blank CD is a good investment.

This is a known copy issue. Apple uses some sort of copy protection on the disk to stop copies being made. As usual all this does is piss of legitimate users such as yourself who want to back up their disks. Look how many copies are flying around the Net, not much of a prevention to those determined to make copies.
I believe you can use a PC and clone CD. I thought I read about a way to do this on the Mac but alas cannot remember.
Do let me know if you find a way on the Mac as I plan to buy FCP when I buy a new TiBook and would want to do the same.
