What is the best device to get non DV video into a new G4 iMac? Preferrably lowest cost one that has good quality.

Video source: VHS and non DV camera

Thx!

You are looking for something like a Canopus ADVC-100 or Data Video DAC-100. Here are a few starter sites with more info

I would say avoid the Dazzle Hollywood DV Bridge. I have one (I bought it because there were places selling them for $159 last year) and it works ok when your tapes playback well. Some of my older tapes though introduce just a little bit of jitter (even after fiddling with tracking) which causes it to constantly lose sync and sometimes locks it solid (I've wasted way more time than I care with it). I've tested the same tape with a ADVC-100 and it works well. I'm trying to see if the DAC-100 stacks up since it seems to be a good product too.

One thing I would add is to avoid any of the USB (cheap) solutions I got one with it being lots cheaper, I spent days messing around with it and never got it working in a resonable way.

Also, consider not spending too much money on a converter - money that could better be invested in a new camera...

If your source were analogue hi-8, then most of the (Sony) cameras provide digital output (firewire) when playing analogue tapes, so you can import analogue directly into, say, iMovie.

(They also record digitally so you get a better camera thrown in too...)

I bought one of these on behalf of a friend for around 439...

Just a thought...
