Hi,

I'm trying to transfer some vinyl records to my computer using Griffin's Final Vinyl program, but after successfully recording the first song on one side of the record, the audio begins to stutter and get choppy. However, when I preview the audio it plays very smoothly. I'm pretty certain it isn't my turntable because it plays problem free when connected to my stereo. I have a feeling it has to do with hardware inadequecies. I'm using an older iBook (366 G3) running Jaguar.

Has anyone else with a similar hardware configuration run into these kinds of problems? Is it a lack of computing power causing the problem? Is it a problem with Final Vinyl? Any comments/suggestions would be very helpful!

Cheers,
Mike

Audio Vinyl is a beta program that attempts to add the RIAA eq and amplification in the digital domain. Certainly this can be done, but why bother?

I'm assuming that if you have a turntable you probably have a preamp, receiver, integrated amp that has a phono input. Just take the devices line out into you Griffin adapter and be done with it, no beta software to worry about.

If on the other hand you don't have the needed equipment, you can get a basic phono preamp new for under $50. You can find them used for quite a bit less.

Anyway, I would contact Griffin and let them know about the problem with the beta software you are having.

Yes, I do have the needed equipment, but even using Final Vinyl with RIAA equalization turned off, it still stutters after the first song.

Granted I don't necessarily have to use Final Vinyl (come to think of it, I probably won't anymore), but I will need some software to record the audio. Griffin is about to hear a mouthful from me!

Hey sarcastro, could you tell me what turntable you are using for this? Ive got some vinyl Im wanting to get into my Mac but I dont have a turntable. Ive borrowed two from friends but when I connect the RCA's to my stereo I have to turn it up almost full blast to barely be able to hear it. Also, what do you use to get the turntable audio inside the Mac? I have a dual gig QS which just has that strange little audio in jack which is smaller than an 1/8" audio jack. Thanks for any info.

If you need software for recording, my two favorites are Sound Studio by Felt Tip software and Spark Me. Spark Me is few and works very well, the Interface is a bit much, but not terrible. Sound Studio is roughly $50, though there is a 14 day trail version available. Make sure you get the latest version of Sound Studio, there has been some people reporting incomplete recordings when used with 10.2.1. Also, if you are using Toast for buring, they inlcude a piece of software called Spin Doctor, that can do the recording for you.

Good luck.

swiz, your problem isn't your turntable. You need a phono preamp like this one for instance.*

I had this problem playing my vinyl music too until someone clued me in.

Awesome, thanks alot. So would the best peripheral to get this connected to my Quicksilver be the Griffin product?

The best? No.

The cheapest? Yes.

There are plenty of ways to connect your stereo to your quicksilver, most using USB based audio processors, though there are also firewire based audio units as well, and of course you can purchase a pro level audio card to go inside the quicksilver.

You may also wish to look at products from Edirol, M-Audio, Onkyo (hard to find) and others.

Edirol: http://www.edirol.com
M-Audio: http://www.m-audio.net
Onkyo, check you local audio store that provides equipment for home based recording.

These are just a sampling of what is available.

Thanks Tom, I just bought the Griffin iMic because I was just looking to get a handful of some old vinyl ontp my iPod. It worked great for my purpose using a turntable connected to a receiver deck with internal preamp and the iMic. Your assistance was much appreciated.

Glad to hear! I think it will take me a millenium or two to get all my vinyl and reel-to-reel tapes trasfered and archived. I just hope my old tape deck survives long enough!

good music and good times!
