I want to buy a cheap dvd-player, around 170-200 euro's/dollars. I've seen several Philips, Sony, JVC, Pioneer, Go Video, LG, but have no clue what's the best. Some requirements or questions:
1) I has to be regionfree, or I should be able to make it so. (I heard Pioneer cannot be made regionfree; is that true, because I really like the way they look)
2) It should have output to a normal old tv (no scart), as well as of course scart and the rest
3) Is Dolby Surround 5.1 standard on all players? Or does DTS and AC3 cover this?
4) Is the difference between 1 and 2 lasers an important one?
5) Any other tips are welcome!
Thnx!

I'd concider one that plays all formats including SVCD(mpeg-2).
Seems like a good format for the times. CDs are cheap.

I bought a Cyberhome ADL528 a year ago. It's a budget player, to be sure (it was @ £100 then), but it's region-free & I believe to be capable of playing anything -if you're prepared to burn a firmware update cd (from their own site) & play it in it... if you follow the hacks & advice from the forum at www.cyberhome-help.de you'll find a host of other benefits follows...

If you consider yourself a power user, get an Apex. They support nearly all burned media (not miniDVD) and can be hacked/upgraded. There's a big community of Apex users online. I've changed my background picture and upgraded the firmware in my Apex AD-660.

I have an Apex AD-600A. Mine is updated to play DVD-R, and I have a Macrovision free and CGMS/A free multi-region firmware, with dual boot. I have custom backgrounds. See here. I've also hacked it at one point to play DVD-RAM.
However, as far as a real DVD player goes it is of poor quality. The build quality is poor, as is the image quality. Although I have many uses for my Apex, I would NEVER recommend any of the Apex line as your primary player, esp. if you've 200 Euros to spend. Most of the major brands have significantly better picture quality than most Apex machines. (I have only experience with a couple of Apex models, but I have been told that the quality issues apply to Apex's in general.)

SVCD really is a non-standard format. There's no point in having it except to play back movies you've encoded and burned yourself. It's not as if it's easy to go and buy commercial SVCDs, like you can with DVD and VCD.
