Hi
I have watched a couple DVDs on my mac powerbook and wondered if I should be getting better software (I bought a TiBook in August and it has OSX.2 with Apple's DVD Player software.

I am new to the DVD world so I need someone to tell me if I have just discovered the downside of playing commercial DVD's in general or if I need to upgrade my sofware.

When playing a rented DVD, I can't rewind a few seconds and review a scene. It appearas I can only go forward or backward in 5-10 minute segments. Since CD players do allow you to scroll forward and scroll backward in a song, I am wondering if we should be able to do that with DVD's.

I know that there is iDVD software but I figured that was for authoring, not viewing.

Is my problem with the way DVD's work or is there some software out there I should use to make the experience better when playing DVD's on my Mac?

Click and hold to rewind or fast forward. If you click and release to go forward or backward in chapter steps.

I think you can fast forward and rewind by holding down the buttons for skip forward and skip backward, respectively. by the way, those buttons jump to chapter designations, if you were wondering. I'm pretty sure the OS 9 DVD player had separate buttons for this. Also, I know the OS 9 player had an option to view the counter/playhead-time/whatever it's called, but you had to dig around a little; well, I can't find the option for that in OS X's DVD player, so if anyone knows it, please speak up!

also, you can play DVD's in VLC, but the sound output from VLC is pretty poor. But it doesn't make you watch the FBI warning and it doesn't prevent you from taking screenshots of DVDs.
blackmail is such an ugly word. I prefer extortion. the X makes it sound cool
