I'm having some trouble importing jpgs and mp3s into iMovie. In the import window, I'm trying to get into my iPhoto and iTunes libraries, but 99% of the pics and songs there are greyed out. Only a few mp3s and jpegs are available for me to import. What's up with that?

Thanks for the links. Seems like a pain in the butt... hopefully this will be fixed soon? Anyway, I tried the quick and easy fix, which was exporting the pics from iPhoto in jpeg format to a new folder and then trying to import them. It appeared that about 1/2 of the pics were available for import and the other 1/2 greyed out. Any thoughts on why that method is so inconsistent?

Also, what about the mp3s? Same problem? If so, will the same solutions apply?

Thanks again!

Look for Photo to Movie and Still Life at versiontracker. Still Life is donationware, Photo to Movie is $9.

Seeing that iMovie lists Photoshop files in the import drop down menu, I used Photoshop Elements to open a JPG file from my iPhoto sub-folder, save it as a Photoshop PSD, and then drag it into iMovie. Works fine. Sorry if this is too obvious, but I'd guess that since iMovie lists AIFF files in the drop down menu as well, that a conversion from MP3 to AIFF is necessary there - anyone have software suggestions for accomplishing this?

That was the slowest and hardest fix in that article. Did you see the part where it said to open the Terminal and type this:

cd /path/to/iPhoto/archive
cd /2002/some/image/folder
SetFile -t JPEG *.jpg

cd means Change Directory. You can type
man cd
to learn more. You can also type
cd
followed by a space and then drag the folder with your pictures to the terminal window. Then, assuming there are no sub-directories, you can type
SetFile -t JPEG *.jpg
just like it says. No copying, no recompressing, no exporting. They should all work now. Same probably goes for mp3's with MPEG substitued for JPEG. If that doesn't work, type
man SetFile
and find out how to delete the type code. man means Manual.

vdrummer, iToons can convert to AIFF. in the preferences find the import settings.

works great, thanks! I guess I shouldn't have believed the Apple ads about how easy iMovie would be. How hard would it be to auto-convert when dropping an MP3 clip onto the cliptray - or at least a pop-up window to give instructions.

This should probably start another topic, and I will probably do so when I'm ready to spend some time with it, but I was very surprised that iMovie can't read a MOV file created by my Nikon digital camera. Apple support says use Quicktime Pro to convert it to a DV stream, but neither did that work for me. I'll be sticking to my Windows applications for now.

Pardon the griping,

vdrummer

sooo... you couldn't convert to DV Stream, or the DV Stream wasn't accepted by iMovie. If the latter, did you try importing from the menu and/or putting the file in the Media folder of an iMovie project?

I dunno why iMovie is this lame and why this major flaw still hasn't been corrected.

How the hell did they program this thing?

Yes, I converted it to a DV stream using QT Pro 5 (on a Windows XP machine) and I couldn't import it via the menu or by dragging into the clip tray; the filename stays "greyed out", suggesting that it's an improper format. I asked an Apple Rep about it (still within my 90 days), and they said (after offering the convert to DV suggestion) that they couldn't help me anymore, and I'd have to pay $150 or something to talk to someone in multimedia. It's nothing I really need now, so I've given up for the time being - got a bit of shopping to do -

Thanks for your input!
