Just got my new Superbook and I want to burn some videos. I'd like to get a spindle of dvd-r's at a reasonalble price but don't know which brand/type to get. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance... (and first post!)

The best brand to get is Apple. Seriously, it is much harder to buy the wrong media with Apple, but some of the other medias don't neccessarily work with the superdrives apple uses.

I would recomment blue-labeled Optodisc DVD-Rs. They are $.85 apiece in spindles of 50 at www.rima.com. I don't have a powerbook with superdrive, but they do work well with my firewire superdrive. However, it is always a good idea to test media with the DVD players your will be using before buying large numbers.

My last (blank-labelled) Optodisc DVD-R burn flaked out. I was trying to back up a clone of boot drive. I'll try again with TDK media.

In my very limited experience, Optodisc is better than the ultra low end stuff, but Apple media is much more reliable. However, it'd better be, since it costs US$5 a disc. For cheap media, the non-branded TDK seems to work well (on my 1X burner), but are about $3 - not that cheap either. I guess you get what you pay for with DVD-R.

OTOH, Optodisc DVD-RAM seems to consistently work fine for me, despite being quite inexpensive. Their DVD-RAM (but not DVD-R) is Panasonic-certified, whatever that means.

I haven't tried the blank labeled ones, since the blue-labels worked well for me and I didn't see the need to keep experimenting. When you say it "flaked out" what happened?
