OK, first a little disclaimer so that I don't get shot down by the Thought Police® Recently I dropped a DVD and it managed to fall on a rough stone floor (on my porch) and scratched to the point that I can't play it anymore. Of course I was stupid to drop the disk, but since it's completey legal to make backups of media for personal use I thought I was pretty dumb in the first place to not have made any DVD backups. That's why I'm asking how to copy DVDs - it's not about piracy.

OK, now that the legal crap has been dealt with, my question: Is there any neat software solution (shareware/freeware) to convert the movie on a DVD together with sound and (maybe subtitles) into the Video-CD format? Why Video-CD? I don't have a DVD burner and I don't want to have these huge movie files on my HD. I was just thinking of a programm that would take the data being displayed into my DVD Player Window (including sound, subtitles) and make a movie file out of it which could be burned to CD and be played like a VCD. I have Toast, so I am just looking for the software to do the DVD->VCD conversion.

Does anybody here have a solution? Thanks in advance for any help.

First off, let me say HA HA HA HA!!!
OK anyway, there are programs that rip DVD's, but not into any real usable format. And there is of coarse Media Cleaner. If there was a ripper that was able to rip to a readable format, or even right to pure DV, then media cleaner could convert it into VCD or some even better formats. As of right now I have never been able to successfully rip a DVD. But I don't need to (KaZaa).
