I have a .wav file which i can't play on my mac, can I convert it to an .aif somehow so that I'll be able to play it on my mac?

Your mac should be able to play .wav files. Try using Quicktime.

A WAV file is just a wrapper - if quicktime cannot play the file - it doesn't have the appropriate codec.

If it doesn't have the codec then it can't transcode it to AIFF

I've been using a nice little application called SoundApp PPC for converting audio files... it might help (and it's free)

You could try SoundApp. It plays some wave files that will not play in QT Player. Particularly, it plays GSM encoded wave files that QT can't.
