Hey gang... I want to move some of my Quicktime videos over to e friends PC running Win 95. Her computer is really old but it had a hardware mpeg-1 decoder. I have found a few free utilities to encode mpeg-1 files but encoding time is around a 1:20 ratio which is unacceptable for me as I want to encode about 10 hours, and I don't have a spare 200 hours of CPU time.

I would like to just encode as mpeg-4. Does anyone know of any win 95 software that will play mpeg-4 files encoded with QT? Will it run on a 100mhz pentium?.... the bitrate is ~200KBps

shoot. If anyone can suggest any way for me to encode these files (target size is < 50 MB per file... seinfeld episodes... ;-)) to play on her machine I would like to hear it!

you might be jiggered 100 mhz is pretty slow. I happen to have all the seinfelds in MSMPEG4v1 format, and it's got me thinking that you could use ffmpeg to encode to that format, as it might be heavily optimized by MS and their code monkeys. You'll also get better performance for encoding and decoding if you drop the resolution, to say 240x176. Or divx5 might be more optimized. Try a few and see. Try 3ivx too, they pride their latest release on speed, both encoding and decoding. Let us know how it turns out
