can i save a final cut pro 3 movie to quicktime format or the fcp format and delete the clips than start a new one and import the old one to it so i can save hard drive space?

yes
If I understand you correctly;
You can save as self contained movie(use the fcp movie instead of the qt to save time)
start a brand new project with different files and add the pre-made movie to your timeline.

If you are happy with the final movie output(be sure to keep it uncompressed) the way it is yes you can delete the media files. However, I'd just start a new project insead of working in the old project with missing media clips.

ok so basically i am going to save my movie as a .fcp format than i can delete the files and start a new project and import the old movie and not be missing any media files. this works right?

assuming your working in DV-NTSC or PAL
and the fcp movie is saved in DV...

YES

If you're nervous about it, just rename the files and use a copy of the project file. If things don't go your way, you still have the originals.

wait cant i just save it as .fcp then delete files and not empty the trash than start a new one and see if it still works

If you don't empty the trash. You won't free up any space

i know thta, but it is just to make sure that the old movie will still work so just incase it says any media clips are offline i can just go back and not worry about having to find the tape again
