Hi everyone.
I posted a topic a while back about audio input options for a new G4 tower. spiky_dog said I should check out Edirol, and after I did that and visited GuitarCenter I narrowed the field down to a cheaper choice and a more expensive choice, an Edirol UA-20 or an MBox.
All I really need is something to plug my guitar into that OS X can take input from. The UA-20 fits this bill, but if I splurge on the MBox I get the 24-track version of ProTools, too. Is there any other reason to pay $300 more? I guess having RCA input might be nice, but it's definitely not that important to me.
Can anyone who has used either of these give me some opinions of them? Or should I be looking at something different altogether?
Thanks for any help,
Phil.

i probably said exactly this last time, but if you splurge just a tiny bit and get the ua- 30, rca inputs are yours. but then again, if you don't want them in the first place... basically, get what you want. you won't go wrong with either.

u can always go to digidesign.com & download pro tools free, an eight-tracks-of-audio version of pt...that's free!
the edirol is nice, the m-box a little nicer...

the m-box has focusrite mic preamps, if that matters to you. and getting protools with the box is pretty cool, has a lot more features than ptfree. then again, the edirol is pretty nice, too. wow, i bet this has been real helpful!
you know, why can't someone come out with a box like these, only using firewire? we have the MOTU 828, but that's just way too much. all i want is audio firewire input, i'd be willing to pay a few hundred for it too. don't need a whole rack thing, just a little box.

ProTools Free is what I used on my old G3, when I was running 9. If I was convinced that DigiDesign was going to release an OS X version of PT Free anytime soon then I might go with the UA-20.
Thanks for the help, everyone.
Phil.

yeah, pro tools shouldn't be an issue for you since you wanted an OS X solution, and there's no way that Pro Tools Free is going to be out for OS X too soon since the full version (6) isn't even yet.
You may want to check out the eMagc audio interfaces if you're going so spend on an m-box. I don't know what they come with software wise, but I'd feel a whole lot better builting something around Logic which has already been running in OS X for three versions now. unless they only come with audio drivers, in which case, oh well.

I had the eMagic Emi 2|6 audio interface, but i sold it and bought the M-box.
the Emi 2|6 doesn't have mic preamps, and it only has RCA-inputs and it comes without software.
the m-box comes with ProTools 5 (for OS9 only), focusrite mic preamps and xlr/jack inputs.
I'd recommend the M-Box for you, there you can just plug your guitar in and start playing

Thanks for the input, everyone. I think I've decided on an M-Box, I just have another question:
A guy at GuitarCenter told me that DigiDesign would release an X native version of ProTools in the first couple weeks of the new year, and when they did it would be a free upgrade. Does anyone know if this is true? If it is, I'd go ahead and buy the M-Box right now.

here's a link on ProTools 6.0 on X, supposedly, it was to be released at the end of 2002, but i'm sure they will be showing it at NAMM 2003 in a couple weeks.

look carefully at the sys req's
Digidesign-approved Pro Tools TDM (Pro Tools|HD, Pro Tools|24 MIX, Pro Tools|24) or LE (Digi 001 and ToolBox) system running Mac OS X (support for Mbox and Digi 002 coming soon).
Pro Tools 6.0 for OSX is scheduled to be released at the end of this year with support for the following systems: Pro Tools TDM (Pro Tools|HD, Pro Tools|24 MIX, Pro Tools|24) and Pro Tools LE (Digi 001, Audiomedia III & ToolBox) with support for Mbox and Digi 002 to follow. Windows XP support of the new features in Pro Tools 6, and OSX compatibility with AVoption|XL, Unity, and MediaManager are scheduled for Q2, 2003.
as you can see, Mbox and 002 support will come later, hopefully not TOO much later...
