Hi,

what I would like to do is converting my VHS videos to DV format (that already works - I'm using a Formac studio DV) build a simple menu and publish it all to a firewire hard disk. From there I would like to use the Apple DVD player to play this.

After that I would like to burn the movies on a DVD using an external DVD burner.

BTW:

I tried different QT codecs (Sorensen, MPEG 4) and so on but the result was below the (already not very good) VHS quality. Does iDVD (or other software) use other codecs ?

I'm not sure I understand what you are trying -- if you are going to be making DVDs you have to convert the DV files to MPEG2. In order to do that you will need to have DVD Studio Pro or some third party piece of software like Capty DVD/VCD or the Formac software that goes with their DVD-R drive.

I've had pretty good luck converting VHS to DVD. The quality isn't noticably worse than the origial.

Thanks for the answer. I think that the formac bundle bundle would be the best solution for me. Do you have any experience with this product ?

BTW: Do you know if DVD Studio Pro would work with an external DVD burner ?
