I just ordered FCP3 for my GigaBook and was wondering a couple of things...

1. In QT6 Pro, I see that it supports MPEG4, but not MPEG2 anywhere... don't I need MPEG2 for FCP3? So Will I have to get QT5?

2. Can I use my iPod for a video capture drive? It is fast enough?

Thanks

1. No you don't need mpeg 2 for fcp. Unless of course you are making dvds. Then you may want to look at dvd studio pro.
As for just playing mpeg 2 files
**Available via QuickTime 6 MPEG-2 Playbck Component, sold separately in the Apple Store online.

2. To be honest I have no idea how fast the drives run. However, don' t bother. Even the 20 gig drive may be too small for even small projects. And for the price, it seems quite wastefull.

if you have a superdrive, that means you havd iDVD right? that means you already have an mpeg-2 codec to make DVDs.

as for the ipod i think they are 4200 rpm drives, and i agree it would be wasteful.

so let me understand this...

I would capture and log my DV footage, then edit it in FCP, and when I'm finished with it, save it as what?? FCP Ref Movie? And then iDVD will do the rest?

If thats the case, great!

I still wonder why QT6 doesn't have Mpeg2 built in? Oh well..

If you can wait a couple weeks on that purchase there is a very good chance that there will be a major FCP update at macworld (Jan. 7)

too late... but I also heard that that was gonna have some features like 24fps and DV50 that I will not need, and there's a good chance that it will cost a bit more??? Do you know if it will have any good consumer level features that I should hold out for? If so, I guess I could always return the software (unopened).

Nobody knows for sure when FCP4 will come out and what features it will have. 24fps and DV50 seem to be a given. Besides that chances are very high that the sound part will see a big improvement now that Apple owns Emagic. Also the compositing/titling part will probably see enhancements.

Also: AFAIK FCP's price has been the same for all versions. You may check for some student rebate though.
