I just burnt a DVD from iMovie2.1, and poppoed it in my DVD player (JVC XV-523) and it doesn't play. The DVD player just sits there, says "Reading" and does nothing. It plays fine when played on my computer. I checked apples DVD player compatibility list, and my DVD player is compatible.

Store bought DVD movies work fine. Several months ago, I did the iDVD tutorial and burned it, and it played fine. But when I tried to play it this morning, I got the same problem, it wasn't recognized.

I am using Apple 4.7gb DVD-R discs bought from the Apple Store, the tutorial project was burnt on the free DVD that came with the computer. Again, the DVD player plays store bought DVD movies fine! What gives?

Any ideas?

You DVD player isn't compatible with DVD-R media, or is very picky about what DVD-R media it likes.

See:
http://www.apple.com/dvd/compatibility/

for compatibility.

Thanks Ganesh,
But if you read my post a little more carefully, you will see I stated I already checked the compatibility list. The DVD player is compatable. Also, you will see that it played the DVD-R media previously with no problems, only to not play the very same disc now.

Anyone else have any ideas?

I'm confused. In your first sentence you say you "burnt [sic] a DVD from iMovie2.1." Do you mean that you burned a DVD from within iMovie 2? Or that you created a movie in iMovie and then burned it in iDVD?

Also, when you put the DVD that you created back in your Mac, does the DVD player launch? What kind of disc does it show up as on your desktop?

Sorry,

I created a new project in iDVD 2.1 and imported the movie I created in iMovie 3. Then burned the DVD disc from iDVD.

The disc playes fine when back in my computer, and DVD player launches automatically. I've checked the disc on a couple OS9.2.2 machines at work, and it also playes fine, again the DVD players launching automatically.

I haven't yet had the chance to try it on a different DVD player (not computer).

The really weird part is that the tutorial I did (and burned from iDVD) played in the dvd player fine several months ago, but now won't work.

Your JVC isn't really very DVD-R compatible. Sort of a borderline one according to the www.vcdhelp.com website.

You are unlucky and lucky at the same time. Most people do VERY well with Apple media and many people have problems with Memorex media.

I for one use Apple 2X media exclusively. The generic brands and low-end brands are far too unreliable.

Well, I tried the DVD disc on another dvd player, and it worked fine. So, I guess my player doesn't like the Apple "flavor" of DVD-R. Oh well!

i have a funny situation also.

Recently i burnt a disc using iDVD on my imac, the original source was PAL DV. What i find is that when it is burnt it is converted to a NTSC signal, this is fine by me as i have a multi format home DVD and TV. I played the disc and it worked fine not one problem, on my home DVD ( Pioneer DV737 - High end Model) I decided to send it to my brother in the US where he would play it on his high end NTSC only DVD, it starts out fine but about half way through it totaly locks up and won't go any further. I am currently visiting him and have tried it again in my powerbook and the same thing is happening where as before it worked fine.
My conclusion is these DVD R's seem to be a little chosey at any slight imperfections and create problems, my other burns still work fine.

It's got me!

The Apple DVD's are made by Pioneer i understand anyway.
