Is there any way to improve dark video shots in imovie in a similar way to how this can be done in photoshop.

sure: imovie 3/effects: you will find the entry "brightness and contrast"

BUT (there's allways a but):
if there's just plain black on your tape, you can't make it any brighter or get more details!! if the quality of your recording is bad, there's no way of enhancement in post-production.-

you can't compare to photoshop, 'cause scanned images have a much "deeper" data structure then video-pix (resolution, contrast, 48bit color coding etc.)
