I have an audio project that requires sounds from an outdoor environment (forest) and I ahve no experience with audio whatsoever. So I would like to know if anyone can recommend audio software and microphones/preamp for a 400 mhz powerbook with 2 FW ports.

check versiontracker.com for apps, do a search for "audio"

you might look for a good stereo mic, try a music store.

recording the outdoors is much tougher than it seems...background noise, jets, traffic...

you may need to do some eq'ing to your recording as well.
