Just getting into dvd production with idvd 2 (maybe get 3) but may need to send a disk to a company for replicating, they have been very helpful and supplied me with a spec sheet for their master requirements which says:
Final Master Recording Blanks/Hardware

When using DVD-R, please make sure to use either the "professional"
or (preferred) "authoring" versions; the "general" version will not work.
When recording DVD-Rs, please do not try it with a DVD-RW multiformat recorder;
this is consumer hardware which will not fulfil the requirements.
You should use a Pioneer DVR-S201 recorder; we know this recorder is
working very well.

Writing out Master Discs/Tapes.

DVD-Rs
The major point in using DVD-Rs is, to record the disc in the DAO ( write
Disc At Once ) mode and write a Lead Out !! This means to close the image
and the disc. There are other options to record DVD-Rs ( almost equal to
the CD-R ), but please do not use them for mastering purposes.
my question is does iDVD do the authoring happily enough or do i need something else (roxio toast with jam for e.g.).

Also where do i get professional/authoring dvd-r, i have an emac 800 with internal superdrive and for the amount of work we will be getting in this upgrading ain't an option at the moment

this is going to be your biggest problem. The superdrive is exactly the "consumer hardware" they're talking about

yeah, you're going to have to burn your stuff on an authoring drive. i think the S-201 is a SCSI, isn't it? (if that's the case, i think you're out of luck with your eMac) it uses the 3.95 GB and 4.7 GB authoring DVD-R's. basically, this place is telling you that you should be using a pro app, like DVD Studio Pro, which can burn masters using the S-201.

i think that's it. most people who send out stuff for DVD replication usually put their project on DLT tape.

you might want to check other replication companies out there, i saw a few on the web that will master from general DVD-R media.

They are talking about professional grade DVD-R hardware. Yeah. I think you may need DVD Studio Pro to make this work.
