don't worry, it's also easy in X
on X, go to Library (not the one in System, the main Library). create a folder there named "Sounds". drop your aif's in there. now, if you go to the sys prefs-->sound, your sounds will be in the alert list. the sounds that came with your system will say "built-in", the sounds you add will say "system shared"
