How to backup a DVD-R using Mac OS X?

I'm using a Panasonic DMR-E30 to archive my VHS video collection to DVDs. These DVD-R play fine on any of my home DVD players but in Macintosh OSX they not only don't play with Apple's DVD Player, they mount as volumes with 0 items.

I can play them using the VLC Media Player.

I want to be able to discard my old videotapes after archiving the content to DVD but especially in the case of video that is important to me I'd like to be able to back up the DVD (without having to actually record and edit it twice).

My question is how do I back up a DVD-R if when mounted in X it shows no contents?

I'm sorry that i don't have an answer for you - but am also quite keen to hear of a solution. I too have Panasonic DMR-E30 burned DVD-Rs that I'd like to backup but haven't figured out how to do so using OSX.

I've spoken with Apple on this issue and they are aware of the problem (apparently there is also a Sony DVD burner that has the same problem) but no help or news about a fix.

I haven't tried this yet but I since my iMac running OS9.2 can see the DMR-E30 burned DVD-Rs normaly i have thought about trying to burn copies via ethernet??

1) Boot into OS 9, and copy VIDEO_TS folder to hard drive
2) Boot back into OS X, Open up Toast, and select the DVD burning option
3) Create a new DVD and name it whatever you want.
4) Drag VIDEO_TS folder into DVD and burn it.

Or if you have Toast in OS 9, you could just do the above there.

It's an OS X.2 permissions issue. Ironically, these discs reportedly work fine in X.1.

[EDIT] (macbarry, I didn't know you had an OS X-only machine.)

I posted this in the other thread, but here it is again:

Burning thru ethernet would be a bad idea I think. Too much chance for a buffer underrun, although theoretically it could be done. However, what you could do is copy the VIDEO_TS folder over via ethernet (or Firewire target mode), and then burn.

The other option is accessing the root account, but it doesn't seem to solve all problems as easily as just using OS 9. Maybe you can try with the root account, but personally I don't like fiddling too much in there.
