flash card problems-can't find pictures

I just got back from vacation in Florida to find that all but one of my 260 or so pictures/movies are missing. I use an HP 120 camera with a 128mb viking compact flash card and a Ruby iMac with X.2 . At high quality, i can fit around 420 pictures on the card. Pictures and movies combined, I had space for about 66 more pictures on the card before I lost everything. it now says that there are no pictures on the card, but only room for 66 more. When i set the camera to disk drive mode it says on the computer that the card is unreadable, but it works fine as a camera.

I don't know what to do, and I don't want to reformat the disk and lose all of those pictures of me with shamu, and epcot, and minnie mouse, and everything.

I want to know if there is a program that will read and/or fix the disk and get my pictures, or if a seperate card reader will help.

I had a corrupt 128 compact flash card which would crash my camera.

I bought a seperate card reader, for half the price of a new card, and managed to recover everything.

The card reader is also super handy for transferring files, 128mb in the pocket so to speak.
