Can someone recommend a decent but affordable mini DV editing deck compatible with FCP via firewire?

No need for recording feature here. Strictly just a playback deck for logging and capturing is all I need if there is such a thing.

Thanks.

The cheapest MiniDV decks are the cheapest cameras, believe it or not.

The cheapest decks proper are the Sony GVD series, I believe, one of which I owned for a couple years. The tape transport in it though was of the same variety/quality as the camcorders, so the was no real advantage other than it sat nice and square on a tabletop unlike some of the cameras out there.

The Advantage of the DV deck is of course that you don't wear down your Camera's components. Direktor's probably right though. Get a cheap DV camera. You can record with your higher quality unit, and playback with a $300 DV cam.

Using the camera wastes the heads and they are not meant for that, also FCP does not really send signals to the camera as iMovie does. Which leaves you with the deck...?
Best all around deck is the Sony DSR-11 take a look at it as it is worth it...

Also can be used for pass through for video to VCR or SVHS.
