...it just wasn't designed for this kind of work! I'm having a blast with FCE and iMovie, but when it takes 12 hours to render a deinterlace filter (37 min video) it kinda puts a damper on the whole project. I cringe thinking about the time it will take for compression. Suppose I were to upgrade to a G4 PowerMac (and finally ditch that ol' pc), would it be realistic to expect at least a 4-fold increase in performance due to Altivec? Also, is FCE/iMovie smart enough to take advantage of dual-processors?

Well, I'm gonna answer my own question:
I zipped down to CompUSA and bought a dual 1.25 PowerMac and look at the difference! I might get this project done today after all.

deinterlace filter removes the flicker. It's a deflickerer.... or whatever.
DV is interlaced in order to achieve 29.97 fps. This is why 24P looks so much better... it's because each of the 24 frames is progressive non-interlaced. The deflickerer filter or whatever you want to call it makes interlaced 29.97 fps DV footage look smoother and more "film-like".
That's all I know. If you want more info, throw more bait in the water

Hmmm... I wonder if the de-interlace filter would work with video off a DVD (from my Hitachi DVD camcorder). I don't seem much mention of it.
Does the filter come with FCE? I've got a TiBook 1 GHz.
P.S. That WAS one damn fine impulse buy.

Don't know if it will work for the application you mention.
Yes, De-interlace comes with FCE. FCE has just about all the filters and effects that FCP has except 3-way color correction.

You would only want to deinterlace if you are making a quicktime movie, otherwise you will see a "banding" effect from mismatched fields. Take a look at this little clip that was encoded in iMovie:
Hull(interlaced).mov, 2.5MB, QT6 required
Notice the horizontal bands, especially during the flash photography. The same clip encoded in FCE, deinterlaced:
Hull(deinterlaced).mov, 2.2MB, QT6 required
Much better now, isn't it? It's too bad iMovie doesn't have a deinterlace filter... IMO it is worthless for making QT movies. I love editing with iMovie though, then importing into FCE for the encoding.
BTW, I'm absolutely luvin' my new dualie mac! Truly a work of art.
