How are the compression rates/files sizes that are generated using this? I have QT5 Pro, but am considering buying QT6 Pro soon if .mp4 can help save hardrive space.

Example of what I've been doing- take an .mpeg, demux it with bbDEMUX, take the m1v file that is generated, open it with QT5, copy an .aiff file into that, then export as a .mov for use in iDVD. This works all fine n' dandy, but for something small, even 3 minutes, I'm finding that even the smallest files that are generated are still too large for my liking. This is where the possibility of QT6 Pro comes into play.

Would it be worth it to buy QT6 Pro if I'm going to be doing this for the next while and I'd like to save hardrive space? If I can have the file sizes for .mpegs that are 3-20 minutes long shrunk significantly using .mp4, I'll definitely be buying it.

Jim,

For curiosity's sake, I did a quick comparison between the two. Now, I don't demux MPEGs at all, so I don't know if these'll apply to your specific needs. It may give you a guidline.

Source:
  • 2:55:27 QuickTime movie, Animation codec
  • 720x480, Millions of colors, 29.97 fps
  • Audio: Uncompressed, 44.1khz, 16-bit
  • File size: 3151.3 MB (18 MB/sec data rate)
  • Content: motion graphics piece created in AE, not constant video (if that's important)
I exported into both Sorenson 3 and MPEG-4 using QT-Pro 6 at the highest quality settings, maintaining size and fps. I also stripped the audio.

Sorenson 3: 484 MB (approx: 85% reduction in file size). 2.7 MB/sec data rate

MPEG-4: 358.8 MB (approx: 89% reduction), 2 MB/sec data rate
I am stupidest when I try to be funny.

That really does help me in trying to make this decision! Thank you! That's some nice reduction....
