i've been capturing some VHS tapes with my canopus ADVC-100, into iMovie, which gives acceptable results.

I'm thinking about moving over to FCE, to have more options. I'm wondering if there are any plug-ins or filters available for the program to improve the quality of VHS captures. i'm thinking de-noising, etc.

i know of a program called "virtualdub" on the PC, which had a ton of filters, and some people i talked to managed to get a near-DVD quality result at the end of it.

so.. anybody got any suggestions or ideas?

thanks!

in case of accidental ingestion, consult a mortician.

it's a bit more money, but Media Cleaner (actually I think it's just called Cleaner now) from Terran is probably the best (and slowest) software available for, well, cleaning video. FC[E,P] is really an editing app, and what you want is slightly different. For free there's also MediaPipe, which has acceptible replacements for most of Cleaner's filters (with the notable exception of Brightness/Contrast for some rediculous reason).

Be sure to deinterlace if your footage is interlaced. It's often hard to tell if it is, because iMovie and QT have a habbit of dropping to one field by default to save hard drive bandwidth (I think that's why). But they won't do this when exporting to another format unless you tell them to

And isn't cleaner 6 now advertising how fast it is??? I'm trying it out on a demo and it's SLOW. Thinking about taking a look at the full version at work though.

Well ... are you comparing it to Cleaner 5? Apparently, that's even slower.
